The Maison du Compagnon expansion project touched our team deeply, both because of the organization’s inspiring mission and the exceptional dedication of its staff. Solicited in early 2022, the Atelier Novako & Artcad team was given the mandate to design an annex housing five new apartments, offices, a community room and various complementary spaces.

Throughout the process, we were committed to offering much more than just plans. Using an integrated approach, we accompanied our stakeholders every step of the way: from architectural design to navigating the administrative process, including support with calls for tender and approval applications. This active collaborative stance enabled us to act as true partners, on both a human and technical level.

Today, at the end of a journey marked by listening, solidarity and collective intelligence, we are proud to unveil the fruit of this joint effort. Buoyed by the resilience of a mobilized community, the Maison du Compagnon is now better equipped than ever to meet the social challenges of its region and welcome with dignity those who need it most.

Inspired by the volumetry of a traditional Canadian house, the Maison du Compagnon and its modern insertion forge links with Quebec’s architectural tradition. Driven by values of caring for people and the wider community, the extension and its heritage create an integrated community gathering place where people can share, learn and grow.

The kitchen, the heart of every Quebec home, also becomes the home of La Maison du Compagnon. Host to many residents and community events such as La Sarre’s community soup, the kitchen is a place of welcome, inclusion and exchange between residents, caregivers and the community.

The staircase is a symbolic architectural element of ascent and transition. It was clear from the outset of the project that this element should be celebrated and unique. Guided through the building, users are transported by an invigorating yellowish color. Yellow, an energizing and hopeful color, accompanies users on their journey through La Maison du Compagnon. This unique feature makes La Maison du Compagnon’s staircase more than just a way out, it’s the pathway of a person going through a period of vulnerability towards a new life carried by hope, beyond social and cultural obstacles.
